This study examines the representation of Ukrainian topics within the world-renowned 18th-century French reference book<em> Encyclop\u00e9die ou Dictionnaire raisonn\u00e9 des sciences, des arts et des m\u00e9tiers<\/em> edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d\u2019Alembert. Given the historical lack of specialized Ukrainian studies focusing on this foundational work of the Enlightenment, the <strong>research aims<\/strong> to identify mentions of Ukraine and evaluate the content\u2019s accuracy, sources, and underlying ideological influences.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Methods.<\/strong> To achieve this, the authors utilized a digital methodology, navigating the original French text via the University of Chicago portal and its English translation through the University of Michigan. By searching for the keyword \"Ukraine\" across both titles and full texts , the researchers identified 29 relevant entries, centering their primary analysis on the specific \"Ukraine\" article published in Volume 17 in 1765.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Results<\/strong>. Findings reveal that the Encyclop\u00e9die defines Ukraine as a vast European country bordering Poland, Muscovy, Moldavia, and Tartary, emphasizing the fertility of its lands and the freedom-loving character of its people. The entry traces Ukrainian ancestry to the ancient Roxolans and Sarmatians and identifies Kyiv as a major capital established as a colony by Byzantine emperors. However, the analysis indicates that the article\u2019s author, Louis de Jaucourt, relied heavily on Voltaire\u2019s History of the Russian Empire under Peter the Great. Because Voltaire\u2019s work was commissioned by the Russian government to promote its own state narrative, the entry reflects politicized concepts that frequently conflated the distinct histories of \"Rus\" and \"Russia\". This linguistic and historical ambiguity in French and English sources remains a primary factor in why Ukraine has often been mistakenly associated with Russia in Western perspectives.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Discussion.<\/strong> Ultimately, while the Encyclop\u00e9die acknowledges Ukraine as a distinct entity rather than merely a province, the study concludes that the entry remains trivial and incomplete for its time. The authors argue that more accurate contemporary sources, such as the works of Guillaume de Beauplan or Pierre Chevalier, were largely ignored in favor of Russian-aligned historiography. This research underscores how early French encyclopedism was permeated by Moscow's geopolitical myths and propaganda, highlighting a long-standing challenge in the accurate representation of Ukrainian history within the global information space.<\/p>\r\n    <\/div>",
